why is the vatican against the da vinci code film when in fact there are books released all over the world?
writing is really a powerful tool when it comes to sharing the facts about things which people need to know.i really appreciate the works of dan brown.the da vinci code and the angels and demons.i can't wait for the upcoming movie and the release of the third book which is the solomon's key.it's not that dan brown is against the roman catholic.after you have read the books of him it's up to you if your faith will be changed or will be lessen.the works of dan brown inspires people like me.it's better to have knowledge about these things so that you'll not be ignorant.i say it's a nice and good reading material 'cause the author used the facts about our religion to make a good and sensible novel.

I'm mad that the Church is speaking out against it. The book is fiction. The only problem I have with it is that if you are not grounded in your faith, you could take it as fact. I think we need to stop the boycott and accept it as the fiction that it is. I'm glad good works of fiction can still be written.
2 :
because it touched anerve in promoting mary magdalene as being on a par with jesus. the catholic church has always promoted the female form as being inferior to the male.
3 :
Because that film is based on an untrue novel, which is now people are trying to accept as truth ... this is alteration of facts ... only unbelievers they do not know that Fact.
4 :
If they are doing this then it's nothing new. From the earliest times they attempted prevent the distribution of any information which is against their beliefs. That's why the gnostic scriptures were found buried in Egypt (for safe keeping). The Church outlawed all such christian writings, and reading them was punishable by death. So that is how the Christian bible made it, by force. The question is what were they afraid of? Now Dan has reopened that can of worms and they don't like it because the gnostics wrote that Jesus was with Mary Magdalene (and that is quoted in Dan's book).

The vatican is a million dollar enterprise. They fear a backlash to this tale due to opus dei.

You're right that writing is indeed a powerful tool not just in sharing facts but on stirring other peoples minds and inject senseless claims that he himself can't prove. The book has strayed you from the facts after you are claiming that what he used are facts. You gave me an impression that you believe Dan Brown's misrepresentation of the Church as a murderous institution and also that the Christian faith is utterly false. Now, you should know why the Vatican is against it. Brown was deaf tone to the feelings of millions of Christians. It is irresponsible and offensive for Brown to impugn the faith of countless Catholics in this fashion. He has no solid evidence to support these contentions, and in the absence of such evidence it is unacceptable to smear the faith of millions with these charges. A comparable smear would be saying that Lutherans have been murdering the descendants of Luther or that Jewish leaders have been murdering the descendants of Moses. If such charges were made, particularly with no evidence, they would be regarded instantly as vicious and bigoted slanders against what other people hold sacred. Claiming that Catholics have been killing the descendants of their God is a vile and unacceptable assault on their faith. People of all faiths should regard Dan Brown as the viciously bigoted man that it takes to make this kind of charge.

The Vatican is in the news once AGAIN what do you think about this new story?
John Paul II delayed punishing abusive priest: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100410/ts_alt_afp/vaticanreligionchildabuseuscalifornia;_ylt=Al7Sv5QolBMJXtaY_Zv7DY07Xs8F;_ylu=X3oDMTNkc2VoMTNkBGFzc2V0A2FmcC8yMDEwMDQxMC92YXRpY2FucmVsaWdpb25jaGlsZGFidXNldXNjYWxpZm9ybmlhBHBvcwMxMgRzZWMDeW5fcGFnaW5hdGVfc3VtbWFyeV9saXN0BHNsawNqb2hucGF1bGlpZGU- WASHINGTON (AFP) – Pope Benedict XVI and his predecessor John Paul II both repeatedly delayed defrocking a priest who abused young boys and girls in California, The New York Times reported Saturday. A series of letters released by attorney Jeff Anderson to AFP Friday showed repeated misgivings concerning the conduct of California priest Stephen Kiesle raised by senior officials from the Oakland diocese during the early 1980s. John Cummins, the former bishop of Oakland, California asked that he be defrocked in 1981. But four years later, the future Pope Benedict XVI, then a top Vatican official, said the case needed more time and that the final decision should consider "the good of the Universal Church." Cummins said the Vatican was very reluctant at the time to dismiss priests because so many were abandoning the priesthood. The late pope John Paul II also "really slowed down the process and made it much more deliberate," Cummins told the Times. Cummins sent a letter to the Vatican in June 1981 petitioning his superiors to defrock Kiesle, citing a 1978 court case where he had pleaded no contest to abusing six children aged between 11 and 13, according to the court documents obtained by AFP. A further letter sent by Cummins in February 1982 to then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger -- who at the time was responsible for enforcing Roman Catholic doctrine and went on to become Pope Benedict XVI in 2005 -- again urged Kiesle to be defrocked. "It is my conviction that there would be no scandal if this petition were granted," Cummins wrote, warning there "might be greater scandal to the community if Father Kiesle were allowed to return to the active ministry." Kiesle was eventually defrocked in 1987. He later worked as a youth coordinator at a parish in Pinole, northern California for eight months, said Anderson, who represented two of Kiesle's victims in a civil action against the Oakland Diocese. Are they digging their own grave or what?

Would any responsible adult leave a child alone with a priest? Surely the answer must be NO!! And that illustrates the damage the Vatican is doing with it's cover ups and excuses!! The Pope and the vatican in trying to cover up and limit the damage are doing the exact opposite and whilst leading the catholic church into ridicule and derision but are harming christianity as a whole!!
5 :
Sadly, a lot of catholics will just get defensive and make excuses. I remember a TV news story when the scandal broke in Boston, I believe it was. A woman, sitting in a church pew, crying, was interviewed. The news person asked why she was in the church where her child had been "abused." The woman said she had no place else to go for "solace." The "Abrahamic" religions create a dependency that's hard for some to overcome. They're so used to being told what to think, how to act, what to eat, what to wear, who they can marry, when it's okay to have sex, with whom and how, etc., that they're incapable of thinking for themselves. .
6 :
Personally?? I'm convinced they're going down. I'm talking about the whole Catholic church. I don't mean Catholic people per say, but the church itself is corrupt.
7 :
Why does the media keep repeating the same story? Is it because they have run out of any more news about the church, the media has a lot to answer for
8 :
By The Associated Press A timeline of defrocked priest Stephen Kiesle: - 1972: Ordained at St. Francis De Sales, Oakland. - 1972-1975: Associate pastor at St. Joseph's Church in Pinole. - 1975-1978: Assigned to Our Lady of the Rosary in Union City. - August 1978: Kiesle is arrested and pleads no contest to lewd conduct, a misdemeanor, for tying up and molesting two boys. Sentenced to three years probation, record is later expunged. - 1978-1981: Takes extended leave of absence, attends counseling and reports regularly to probation officer. - July 1981: Oakland Bishop John Cummins sends Kiesle's file to the Vatican in support of the priest's petition for laicization. - November 1981: Vatican asks for more information. - 1982: Kiesle moves to Pinole. - February 1982: Cummins writes to Ratzinger providing additional information and warning of possible scandal if Kiesle is not defrocked. - September 1982: Oakland diocese official writes Ratzinger asking for update. - September 1983: Cummins visits Rome, discusses Kiesle case with Vatican officials. - December 1983: Vatican official writes Oakland to say Kiesle's file can't be found and they should resubmit materials. - January 1984: Cummins writes a Vatican official to inquire about status of Kiesle file. - 1985: Kiesle volunteers as a youth minister at St. Joseph's Church in Pinole. - September 1985: Cummins writes Ratzinger asking about status of Kiesle case. - November 1985: Ratzinger writes to Cummins about Kiesle case. - December 1985: A memo from diocese officials discusses writing to Ratzinger again to stress the risk of scandal if Kiesle's case is delayed. - 1987: Kiesle is defrocked. - 2002: Kiesle is arrested and charged with 13 counts of child molestation; all but two are thrown out after U.S. Supreme Court ruling invalidates a California law extending statute of limitations. - 2004: Kiesle pleads no contest to felony charge of molesting a young girl in 1995 at his Truckee vacation home. - 2004: He is sentenced to six years in prison for the 1995 molestation. - 2010: Registered as a sex offender living in Walnut Creek. As You can clearly see the story you cited had been very loose with the facts. In 1978 he was accused of a misdemeanor of tying up two homosexual young men and abusing them and received probation which was later expunged. He was not charged with abusing children aged 11-13. The child molestation occurred 5 years after the Church had done all they could by lacitizing or defrocking him. God bless! In Christ Fr. Joseph

It's really rather pathetic how far the media is getting with their "coverage". So they decided that accusing Pope Benedict XVI was getting a tad old so now they accuse Pope John Paul II. Of course it makes a good story because people are like "What? He was such a good guy? Guess he's just like Ratzinger." But once again they are lacking FACTS. They have absolutely none in this artcle except this line, "[John Paul II] really slowed down the process and made it much more deliberate." -> notice how they don't say how he slowed it down or specified more on the matter. Now if it's such a big deal to them, why don't they talk more about it? Simple answer: they don't know because they have no proof. The media is so one-sided. The reporters almost never interview a Catholic on the matter. They just accuse without any solid proof. That is why no webpage, newsclip or story is factual as a whole. The media likes to add things in to blow things up and make viewers want to see their crummy 2 min. piece. Besides, what's a better storyline? The Pope MAY be involved with covering up a sex scandal but there's no proof yet, or The Pope HAS covered up a sex scandal. The media is fed by what the people want to hear. And it seems that most people enjoy seeing the Catholic Church fall. Newsflash for you and anti-Catholic haters...the Church isn't going anywhere. For 2000 years we have endured persecutions and various schisms. We are the oldest Christian religion in the world with more than 1 billion members.

"Are they digging their own grave or what?" They dug the grave for Valid Catholicism in 1958, with the election of the Freemason Roncalli. The burial took place ten years later when the Sacramental matter and form was invalidated. But when infiltration is gradual, over ten or more years, one generation at least grows up in the "new" morality and have no clue as to the disaster, in fact they will vehemently deny it and fight those who defend Catholic Truth and the True Sacraments. The "new" generation get lots of support from priests who have apostatized and have been "retrained" to "understand the doctrine differently." All priests in the 1980's were compelled to attend "retraining". Er, make that brainwashing. "Digging" is not the correct word. Obliterating is what is being done. Was done. Look up the excommunicant Marxist Teilhard de Chardin, S.J., the vehicle of the Jesuits who promoted the infiltration of the seminaries with undoctrinal teachings, thereby violating every papal predecessor. Also it shouldn't be too hard for anyone to read original papal encyclicals and modern ones and see the shocking difference. Did you know that the Vatican forgave John Lennon for a sacrilegious remark

Did you know that the Vatican forgave John Lennon for a sacrilegious remark?
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – The Vatican's newspaper has finally forgiven John Lennon for declaring that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, calling the remark a "boast" by a young man grappling with sudden fame. The comment by Lennon to a London newspaper in 1966 infuriated Christians, particularly in the United States, some of whom burned Beatles' albums in huge pyres. But time apparently heals all wounds. "The remark by John Lennon, which triggered deep indignation mainly in the United States, after many years sounds only like a 'boast' by a young working-class Englishman faced with unexpected success, after growing up in the legend of Elvis and rock and roll," Vatican daily Osservatore Romano said. The article, marking the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' "The White Album," went on to praise the pop band. "The fact remains that 38 years after breaking up, the songs of the Lennon-McCartney brand have shown an extraordinary resistance to the passage of time, becoming a source of inspiration for more than one generation of pop musicians," it said. Lennon was murdered in New York in 1980. (Writing by Deepa Babington; editing by Keith Weir) The Vatican may be slow, but eventually things are forgiven.

No, I did not know that. I am sure that John could not have cared less. He was absolutely right. In 1963, among young people, the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. It is more noteworthy that the Vatican admitted to slandering Mary Magdalen by calling her a prostitute.
2 :
And I'm sure John Lennon would be so relieved to learn of this... @@ rolls eyes
3 :
I'm sure Lennon really cares.
4 :
I'm absolutely sure that if he were still alive...he wouldn't care in the least.

Who cares what a bunch of grown men in gowns pointing to their imaginary friend think?

".. some of whom burned Beatles' albums in huge pyres.." The last people who burnt music and books in huge pyres were Nazis.
7 :
to bad he didn't ask God for any forgivness
8 :
just like the church took 500 years to apologize to Galileo's family for locking him up in prison. "Oops sorry the universe does not revolve around the earth after all"
9 :
Nope, didn't know that. Why would he have to be forgiven by the Vatican?
10 :
Who cares who the Vatican forgives. Does anyone care if I forgive someone? Not likely. I care more about if God forgives me.
11 :
They shouldn't have taken offense in the first place. If they had just stopped to think about what he was saying and not take it out of context. But I'm sure he had forgiven them the very next day.
12 :
Why would a newspaper care? If it was newsworthy, sure. But not because they were offended. Newspaper people actively search for any dirt they can find. .
13 :
Young people always say crazy things. All that really matters is if he asked God for forgiveness and accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. Otherwise he is in hell and that would be sad.
14 :
The Vatican just answered a question..they never were angry with him or whatever.. The Vatican and many other people care little about what John Lennon has/had to say...
15 :
Whose the Vatican ??? I mean I know who and what the Vatican is, my point is whether he is forgiven or not is totally up to God and I don't think God has the need to discuss His forgiveness or unforgiven with any man or institution of religion.
16 :
It's true - all you need is love.
17 :
the vatican may have, and god bless them for it but i still think hes an a$$
18 :
The Vatican does not have the right to forgive sins committed against God. Only God has that right. There is no Biblical authority for a pope or, for that matter, the Vatican.

Did he die a happy and holy death? John Lennon reaped what he sowed. Just for your information, there have been periods in the history of the Catholic Church when anti-popes reign. We have been living in such a period for about fifty years now. In the time of St. Athanasius, who lived in the fourth century, there was a true pope named Liberius who during his reign gave in to pressure to deny the divinity of Christ. Most all popes preceding Liberius went to their death defending the teachings of the Church and its founder the God-Man Jesus Christ. Athanasius was excommunicated five times and exiled from his episcopal seat in Alexandria Egypt because he refused to go along the heresy of anti-pope Liberius. Athanasius, in a famous letter to faithful Catholics wrote: "they have the buildings but we have the true faith; what is more important the buildings or the faith? Anti-Pope Liberius eventually came around to his senses and cursed the day that he went along with the pressure to deny the divinity of Christ, rather than follow in the footsteps of Christ's Passion and death. However Liberius was the first of a long line of popes preceding him not to be canonnized as a saint. It is the same today. For those outside of the true Catholic Church, which includes many Novus Ordo Catholics today, those who have always sought to deny its primacy over Christians and all peoples worldwide, who rely on their own private interpretation of Scripture would do well to re-read it and beg the Blessed Virgina Mary and her spouse the Holy Ghost to enlighten their minds. "And the Lord said to Moses: How long will this people detract me? how long will they not believe me for all the signs that I have wrought before them?" "Then shall they call upon me, and I will not hear: they shall rise in the morning and shall not find me:" "You shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither you cannot come." "Therefore I said to you, that you shall die in your sins. For if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sin." "Leaving the right way they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam of Bosor, who loved the wages of iniquity, "Jesus answered them: Amen, amen I say unto you: that whosoever committeth sin, is the servant of sin." "Now the sting of death is sin: and the power of sin is the law" And finally, let me add regarding the apostasy throughout world history since about the fifteenth century and which seems to have culminated in the Novus Ordo Catholic Church: "Let no man deceive you by any means, for unless there come a revolt first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition," To find out more about the true Catholic faith visit: www.traditionalmass.org www.cmri.org www.traditio.com

Any man who prefers love and peace to violence, who fights ignorance with imagination, who chooses to be a symbol of hope rather than just another pop act-- that is someone I can admire. John Lennon was a beautiful human being, and those who call him a sinner and say he "reaped what he sowed" are ignoring what their own good books tell them. The Vatican should forgive itself first for its crimes against humanity and knowledge before it passes judgement on a man who made a single, pretty hillarious comment. Serve yourself.
